The Crew Uniform Eco-Initiative

‘Reclaim & Reuse,’ is a crew uniform eco-initiative, in which we are calling upon crew and yacht management companies to collect and donate old uniform to be reused and recycled for charitable causes, in a bid to reduce waste.

We ask for crew to kindly join the initiative by donating any excess or old uniform that otherwise would have been disposed of and for yacht management companies to act as our central ‘collection points,’ where crew are able to drop off these items, ready for donation. Crew à la Mode will provide donation bags for each collection point and we will arrange shipment of the bags. All garments will then be recycled, repurposed or donated to charitable causes and all single collections carbon offset, in partnership with The Ocean Foundation’s ‘SeaGrass Grow’ project.

At a crucial time when the world’s waste and our environmental impact is rightfully under the spotlight, the clothing industry must take all actions necessary to reduce its contribution. In the UK alone, it is estimated that 350,000 tonnes or £140 million worth of clothing ends up in landfill each year. When supplying new clients, we have identified that wastage often occurs due to discontinued styles and the seasonal updating of uniforms for an entire crew. This wastage results in roughly 30% of the unwanted uniform going to landfill, rather than being recycled or reused. Reclaim & Reuse is designed to contribute to tackling this issue.
